11 Embarkation Day Traditions

Whether we admit it or not, we are all creatures of habit and have that one thing (or things!) we do as soon as we board the cruise ship.

Here are 11 popular embarkation day traditions.

1. Goofy Embarkation Photo

It’s the one time in your life when you don’t care what people think of you because you’re on a boat! Go ahead, stick your tongue out and make a goofy face – after all, what you do on the cruise, gets plastered all over Facebook!

2. Slap the Ship

I was behind a guy that smacked the side of the ship when we were boarding. I asked him why he did that, he replied, “Son, I’ve done it for 33 cruises and haven’t had a bad cruise yet.”

3. Check Your Worries at the Door

You’ve crossed the threshold between reality and fun. Time to check your worries at the door. Don’t worry, no one will steal them. They’ll be waiting for you when you get back.

4. Order a Drink

Have a Fun Ship special, a Miami Vice or just a bucket of beer. Break out your sail and sign card and pick your poison. You may as well put your drink down and throw your camera up, flip it around and snap a photo.

5. Get Food

Guy’s Burger Joint, Johnny Rockets, the Horizon Court – they all have an equal portion of calories waiting for you. Bon Appetit!

6. Rearrange Your Stateroom

If you have priority embarkation, chances are you went straight to your room. You take the luggage mat off your bed and stow it underneath, put the $5 bottles of water on the top shelf and move the magazines in the drawer. This is your living quarters for the next seven days, it’s gotta be perfect!

7. Order Champagne for Sailaway

A popular choice is ordering champagne and chocolate covered strawberries for sailaway. What better way to kick off your vacation as you’re sailing off into the sunset.

8. Go to the Main Dining Room

It doesn’t matter if the dining room is open or not – you head straight there to find out where your table is located. If you don’t like the size, then you go to the maître d’ to request a new table.

While you’re there, be sure to check out the menu that’s posted outside the door. When it’s dinner time, you know what you want! Chop Chop!

9. Take Pictures of Your Stateroom

Surely I can’t be the only on guilty of taking a picture of my stateroom? I am always the first one in my room and practically push the others out of the way so they don’t mess anything up. It has to be “picture” perfect.

10. Check-in on Facebook

People have to know where you are, right? If you look at how many people have checked into PortMiami or your favorite ship, it’s in the 1000’s – so it must be a cruise tradition.

11. Text Your Friends

Let your loved ones know you made it onboard and safe. Plus send them that obligatory photo of the lido deck, your drink or burger. Now turn your phone off and put it in airplane mode!
