When we were kids, Follow The Leader was a ridiculously popular game… so it should come as no surprise that once a single cruise line makes a move, others follow in its wake (pun intended). And sure enough, Celebrity will be the latest line to increase the per person, per day gratuities fee.
How Much Is It Going Up?
As is typical, the cost varies by category.
- Guests in suites will pay the highest price, with their cost going from $16.45 per person, per day to $17.
- Inside, oceanview and balcony guests will see their fee go from $12.95 to $13.50 per person/per day.
- Aqua and Concierge class staterooms will go from $13.45 to $14. As you can see, it’s a relatively modest increase, amounting to $.55 cents per person/per day.
When Does It Go Into Effect?
The new rate will automatically go into effect on June 14 for all passengers sailing after July 1, 2016. This comes on the heels of Royal Caribbean raising the daily gratuities rate in April, and Carnival increasing gratuities as of September. Each time the lines increase the daily charge, it leads passengers to revisit the issue of whether or not the charges should be folded into the cost of the cruise, thus avoiding the inevitable outcry from those upset by the additional charge.
