Vicky Garcia, executive vice president of sales and marketing for Cruise Planners – American Express Travel, was crowned the 2012 Woman of the Year by the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society on Saturday, June 2, at a black-tie event held at the Hyatt Regency Pier 66 in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.
“If not for the support of my friends, family, and colleagues this amazing honor and recognition would not have been possible,” said Garcia. “For 10 weeks we all worked diligently to raise funds for the children and families fighting and surviving blood cancer. From this experience I know that anything is possible, and I am forever grateful for the support given to me from past winners as well as my new friends at the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. I am honored, humbled and forever changed by this incredible experience to impact the lives of those affected by this terrible disease.”
As a result of her team’s hard work and dedication, Garcia was able to raise $115,000, a record for Woman of the Year campaigns in South Florida.
“Vicky truly made this her personal mission,” said Joanne Davis, executive director of the Southern Florida Chapter of LLS. “She passionately believes in our cause and reached out to everyone she knows for their support. It is impossible not to admire Vicky. Thanks to her and all of the candidates, LLS raised significant dollars to fund critical research and patient support.”
Every year, in communities across the country, nominees participate in an intensive 10-week campaign to be crowned the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society’s “Man and Women of the Year.” Every dollar raised is a vote, and the funds are used for blood cancer research as well as financial assistance to cover patient expenses for transportation, medication and testing.
