Fathom Highlights The Journey So Far…

Carnival Corporation’s newest cruise line Fathom has released highlights of their first 13 sailings to the Dominican Republic.  Travelers have collectively dedicated thousands of impact days to help Dominican communities flourish.  Here are some of the accomplishments so far.

English Conversation & Learning

Impact: Fathom travelers have provided about 17,500 hours of English interaction with adult and youth students, preparing them for future employment opportunities which in turn, helps boost the economy.

Why It Matters: The largest driver of success in employment in the tourist driven economy of the DR is English proficiency.

Water Filter Production

Impact: Fathom volunteers produced and installed 730 water filters in community homes, impacting the health and wellbeing of thousands of Dominican families.

Why It Matters: The estimated 3,650 recipients will experience a reduction in waterborne illnesses, as well as cost savings from not needing bottled water. Indirect benefits could include better work and school attendance, as well.

Reforestation & Nursery

Impact: Travelers planted over 16,000 seedlings and plants, offsetting the damaging environmental impact of vacationers visiting the region.

Why It Matters: Over time, Fathom’s reforestation efforts will contribute to more nutrient-rich soil, helping reduce soil loss, improve air and water quality, increase biodiversity, and potentially produce higher agricultural yields for local citizens.

Concrete Floors in Community Homes

Impact: Fathom’s guests have installed concrete floors in 40 homes, improving the living environment for hundreds of local individuals.

Why It Matters: Concrete floors provide a safer and cleaner environment, while reducing health risks that go along with dirt floors.

Cacao & Women’s Chocolate Cooperative

Impact: Travelers cleaned 3,700 pounds of cacao nibs, which translates to over 109,000 finished chocolate bars.  They’ve also wrapped, packaged, and prepared for sale over 57,400 products.

Why It Matters: In a region with limited income, Fathom is helping this small, woman-owned business grow, which is contributing to the well-being of employees and their families, as well as other cooperatives.

Recycled Paper & Crafts Entrepreneurship

Impact: Fathom’s guests produced over 9,800 sheets of paper.

Why It Matters: By helping entrepreneurs expand production and sales, travelers are creating important income opportunities and financial independence for women workers.

While the impact results to date are tangible, Fathom is eager to keep building upon the foundation that the company and their guests have created to make meaningful and long-term impact.  The cruise line will continue to bring travelers to the Dominican Republic every other week for three days to come alongside local citizens and help make the region a better place, and monitor the ongoing impact there.  Prices for the week-long trips to the DR begin at $299 per person, and vary by season.
