Fire Breaks Out on Viking Orion

A fire broke out aboard Viking Orion while it was docked in Sydney, Australia on Friday. Early reports indicate the cause was electrical, possibly from a corded device in a guest cabin on deck 5.

The ship’s crew extinguished the fire quickly with help from the local fire service, and no injuries were reported. As a precaution, decks 5 and 6 were temporarily evacuated but the rest of the ship continued operations as normal.

The 930-guest ship’s 14-day voyage out of Sydney was not affected by the incident.

Juneau, Alaska Could Limit Number of Cruise Ships Per Day to 5

On Tuesday night, the Juneau Assembly in Alaska approved a list of policy changes concerning tourism. The objectives include limiting cruise ships to five per day and adding electricity capability to cruise ship docks.

Some Juneau residents want the limit on cruise ships to be even tighter, suggesting a three or four ship limit. However, the city would likely face legal opposition if it tried to enforce that type of cap.

The assembly also voted against dedicating $300,000 for cruise ship dock planning at the secondary downtown port. Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings donated the land to the Huna Totem Corporation, which hopes to build a visitor’s center and cruise ship dock there by 2025.
