Excitement mounted in Miami as Royal Caribbean christened the world’s largest cruise ship with an elaborate and vibrant celebration on Tuesday evening.

The world's largest cruise ship docked in the water, surrounded by a dazzling fireworks display during its iconic christening.

With only a few days before the Icon enters service, its christening took place as Icon of the Seas was docked in PortMiami. The event inside the vessel was hosted by Saved by the Bell star Mario Lopez while legendary soccer player Lionel Messi officially christened the new ship in the AquaDome.

Royal Caribbean, Meyer Turku shipyard, and Inter Miami executives were joined by the crews and their families as well as local county officials.

Royal Caribbean International President and CEO Michael Bayley thanked the people who helped make Icon of the Seas possible. Summarizing the years that went into building it, he said onstage, “It’s been a long and incredible journey—7 years—and our dream has now become a reality. We believe we’ve created the world’s best family vacation. It’s been an exciting journey…and it’s only the Royal Caribbean family that is capable of creating such an exceptional vacation.”

The cruise line also used the opportunity to remind attendees and social media viewers what made Icon such a headliner.

Apart from its record-breaking size, the 250,800-ton ship has 6 waterslides, 7 pools, over 40 food and beverage venues, 20 decks, and spacious family suites. The Icon can accommodate up to 7,600 passengers and 2,350 crew members at full capacity.

Meanwhile, the event broadcast featured aerial views of the ship and its various attractions, including the surfing simulator FlowRider, an art sculpture called the Pearl, its ice skating rink Absolute Zero, and more.

Icon of the Seas was officially delivered to Royal Caribbean last November 27. Its maiden voyage is on January 27, 2024.
