Holland America issued a statement this evening about their private cruise island ‘Half Moon Cay,’ reporting minimal damage after taking a direct hit from Hurricane Irene. Hurricane Irene struck Half Moon Cay as a category 3 hurricane the past Thursday.
Erik Elvejord, a spokesman for the company, said, “Damage was limited and can be easily addressed, and all horses are well with no injuries. Repairs will be made to some island structures, vegetation will be replanted in various areas, and the main guest beach will be renewed in those areas impacted by erosion.”
The island, Little San Salvador Island, was purchased by Holland America Line for six million dollars and is one of the 700 islands that make up the Bahamas. Carnival Cruise Lines also uses the island as a port call.
Guests on the island can do a variety of activities like horseback riding, catamaran, scuba diving, jet-ski, and snorkeling or just enjoy the beaches.
The island expects to be operational for Carnival cruise ship visits by Sunday, September 4. Holland America vessels started calling on the island on October 13, 2011.
