Viking River Cruises takes to the ocean with new ship orders

Viking Century, one of Viking River Cruises 23 ships.

Christmas came early for the STX shipyard in Europe as Viking River Cruises put in an order for two ocean going cruise ships.

The two ships will be 690’ long and 70’ wide.  The ship will carry 888-passengers in 444 rooms and a crew of 444. Construction on the first ship is expected September 2012 and the second fall of 2013.

Currently Viking River Cruises has 23 river ships with four under construction for delivery in 2012.

As with any new ship orders, the contracts are tentative to financing.

According to travel sellers and journalists at the 2011 CruiseOne National Conference this year, River Cruises are “the next big trend.”

STX Europe has built ships such as Allure of the Seas, MSC Poesia, and Carnival Legend.
