Carnival’s New Security Roles Aim to Rein in Drunk Passengers and Unruly Teens

Cruisers recently noticed Carnival Cruise Line’s job advertisements for two new security-related roles: an RSA (Responsible Service of Alcohol) supervisor and a youth security officer.

These jobs come with some pretty unique responsibilities on cruise ships like Carnival, like preventing passengers from becoming too drunk and ensuring the safety of young passengers.

The ad says that the chief responsibility of the RSA supervisor is “to prevent anyone from becoming intoxicated,” keep alcohol away from minors, and ensure that passengers comply with Carnival’s policies and procedures regarding the service and consumption of alcoholic drinks.

Some passengers have pointed out that inebriated guests are becoming relatively common, especially with Carnival’s Cheers! Drink package. For a flat daily rate, passengers can consume up to 15 alcoholic beverages within 24 hours.

Two cocktails are placed on a bar counter. One drink is amber-colored with ice, and the other is a light yellow drink garnished with a lime slice. A bar menu with the text "LATITUDES" and a QR code sign are visible in the background, perfect for checking out Carnival Celebration Tips.

A Reddit user mentioned the irony of it, “Not sure how someone can prevent people being intoxicated if you make it easy (drink package) to consume a lot of alcohol.”

Another netizen highlighted flaws in the drink package policy, “Seems like the RSA job would be made easier if they didn’t force both people in a room to get a drink package when only one drinks alcohol. The 15-drink limit becomes 30 when the other person in the room doesn’t drink alcohol, I see it all the time.”

Disorderly conduct due to intoxication can quickly escalate to fights, criminal behavior, and even death. Earlier this year, a 20-year-old man who had been drinking heavily jumped overboard in front of his family and was never found.

Why Do Cruise Lines Need Security for Minors?

The youth security position is another concern in the cruise industry: the safety of onboard children.

Carnival Cruise Line lists the primary function of the youth security officer as enforcing onboard security policies and regulations concerning younger passengers. The youth security officer ensures that children, teens, and adult passengers get along without negatively impacting each other’s vacations, attends to any complaints about minors, prevents minors from having access to alcohol, and supervises certain shipboard activities.

It added, “Situations with adult passengers should be immediately referred to the SSO and onboard Ship’s Security Staff.

The jobs were posted this week on Carnival’s website.
