Celestyal Discovery has become the first cruise ship in Greece to operate on a marine biofuel blend, marking a significant step toward sustainable cruising.
Biofuel Use in Greek Waters

The vessel was refueled at the Port of Lavrion with a locally produced blend combining conventional marine fuel and a second-generation biofuel derived from recycled used cooking oils.
For context, marine biofuel blends, like the one used by Celestyal Discovery, combine traditional marine fuels with biofuels derived from renewable sources such as cooking oil.
This initiative, a collaboration between Celestyal and Coral Marine Products, aligns with the new standards and is expected to reduce CO2 emissions by nearly 21%.
The biofuel component is produced at Motor Oil Group’s Verd facility from used cooking oil collected locally in Greece, combined with fossil fuel refined at the company’s own plant.
This move reduces emissions and prevents environmental degradation by repurposing waste cooking oil.
Celestyal’s Fleet and Itineraries
Celestyal Cruises operates two ships—Celestyal Discovery and Celestyal Journey—each offering short, destination-focused itineraries.
Celestyal Discovery, newly refurbished and added to the fleet in late 2023, sails three- and four-night “Iconic Greek Islands” cruises from Athens between April and November, before transitioning to the Arabian Gulf for winter sailings.
Her sister ship, Celestyal Journey, focuses on longer itineraries across Greece, Turkey, and the Adriatic, and the Persian Gulf.
