Holland America Line Helps Relocate Bull Moose to Alaska Wildlife Center

Holland America Line has partnered with the Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center (AWCC) to provide a permanent home for a bull moose named Eland.

Orphaned as a calf, he was rescued and raised in human care after losing his mother in the wild.

He eventually found himself without a permanent home when his previous facility closed. With Holland America’s support, AWCC stepped in to give him a safe sanctuary with natural space and expert care.

The name “Eland,” which is Dutch for “moose,” was chosen by thousands of Holland America Line guests and fans through an online vote.

The naming tied the animal’s story to the company’s heritage while creating a personal connection for cruisers who regularly visit Alaska.

“We’re incredibly proud to play a role in bringing Eland to his new home at the Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center,” said Kacy Cole, chief marketing officer at Holland America Line. “His arrival represents more than just a relocation. It’s a reflection of our long-standing commitment to Alaska and its wildlife.”

To further support AWCC, Holland America has introduced fundraising initiatives onboard its Alaska cruises. These include sales of Moose Munch Premium Popcorn, with a portion of proceeds donated to the center, as well as specialty cocktails and Eland-themed plush toys, which contribute additional funds.

Operating in Alaska for more than 75 years, Holland America continues to link its cruise guests to the region through conservation partnerships and educational programming.

Eland now joins other rescued native animals at AWCC, located near Portage, Alaska, where the public can visit year-round.
