The move introduces a distinctly Japanese luxury cruise experience to the market, emphasizing cultural immersion and authentic hospitality.

The 458-guest, all-suite MITSUI OCEAN FUJI, formerly Seabourn Odyssey, debuted in December 2024 after extensive refurbishments. The ship was originally built in 2009 and offers a refined onboard experience that integrates traditional Japanese elements with high-end amenities.

Passengers can dine at four specialty venues, including an omakase sushi restaurant and a partnership with Chef Kiyomi Mikuni, known for blending Japanese and French culinary styles.

Entertainment includes live music, Japanese storytelling performances, and cultural workshops, while wellness offerings feature spa treatments, fitness facilities, and multiple pools.

By introducing its concept of “FUNATABI – Beautiful Encounters with Japan,” Mitsui Ocean Cruises seeks to distinguish itself in the luxury sector by providing a deeply immersive cultural experience.

The ship’s itineraries highlight smaller ports and exclusive shore excursions, including traditional tea ceremonies and artisan-led craft sessions.

Planned voyages for 2025 range from cherry blossom season sailings to summer festival-themed cruises, with stops in ports such as Yokohama, Nagasaki, and Hakodate, as well as international destinations like Jeju Island, South Korea, and Hong Kong.

The expansion aligns with Mitsui O.S.K. Lines’ broader sustainability strategy, which includes a commitment to achieving net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050.

The company has implemented energy-efficient technologies and supports research into reducing maritime emissions through its DarWIN Project.

“MITSUI OCEAN FUJI is the best way to visit Japan, allowing guests to seamlessly experience the country both on and off the ship,” said Anthony Kaufman, head of commercial strategies for Mitsui Ocean Cruises. “This partnership with Architects of Travel will make our unique approach accessible to a select group of North American travelers.”
