New Disney Cruise Ship Rescues Four People From Sinking Boat

Even before it officially launches cruises in the US, the new ship Disney Treasure is already rescuing seafarers. Sailing across the Atlantic to its Florida homeport, the ship answered a call for assistance about 230 miles off the coast of Bermuda.

Disney Treasure was the nearest vessel when the Coast Guard issued a broadcast following a Mayday call. A 50-foot catamaran called Serenity, with four people on board, was sinking. The Disney ship was about 80 miles away when the call was received.

It then launched a small boat and rescued the four occupants, none of whom reported any medical issues.

“We are pleased that the Disney Treasure was able to provide aid to passengers in peril. Our crew members worked together on the rescue, demonstrating their training and commitment to safety,” Disney Treasure Captain Marco Nogara said.

It is thought that a catamaran gasket failure caused it to take on water. Disney Cruise Line took delivery of the new ship ahead of schedule in late October from German shipbuilder Meyer Werft.

The second in the Triton Class, the 4,000-guest ship has more than 1,200 staterooms. It left the Netherlands for its homeport in Port Canaveral, Florida, where it is expected to arrive on November 12.

Disney Treasure’s maiden voyage sets sail on December 21. Its Eastern Caribbean cruise itinerary includes calls to the US Virgin Islands and a private destination, Castaway Cay.

It marks the fifth Disney ship built by Meyer Werft and will be joined in 2025 by the Disney Destiny, which is currently under construction at the Papenburg shipyard. Over the next six years, four more ships are being constructed at Meyer Werft.
