Study Shows Cruises Enhance Memory, Focus, and Relaxation

A recent study by market research firm Walnut onboard Cunard’s Queen Mary 2 reveals the notable benefits of cruising. Advantages include significant improvements in memory, problem-solving abilities, focus, and relaxation.

Cunard and Walnut confirm what we’ve all suspected—that cruises are good for the mind. Their research, which involved 40 passengers on a transatlantic crossing, illustrated that spending at least five days on a cruise can give our mental state and intellectual pursuits a solid boost.

The neuroscience study showed enhancements in the following areas:

  • Memory: Word recall rose by 29%, illustrating better short-term memory.
  • Problem-solving: Complex logical and spatial reasoning improved by 125%.
  • Attention: Participants’ focus during visual tasks increased by 14%.
  • Relaxation: Guests reported a 158% rise in relaxation and a 35% decrease in physiological stress.

Neuroscientist Dr. Jack Lewis affirmed the assessment, stating, “The passengers’ time on the ship clearly reduced their stress levels based on subjective and objective measures.”

He added, “The main stress hormone, cortisol, is well-known in the science research literature to interfere with various cognitive processes. So, the boost in memory and logical reasoning capacity identified in this study is likely to be attributed to the stress-relieving impact of ocean travel.”

Cunard’s President, Kate McAlister, emphasized the importance of cruising and the cruise line’s efforts in creating relaxing and stimulating guest experiences. “This study reinforces what we have always known—a Cunard voyage is much more than just a holiday,” she said.

McAlister continued, “Our thoughtfully curated enrichment programs, bespoke wellness experiences, world-class dining, and renowned White Star Service combined with the opportunity to unwind and embrace the serenity of the ocean leave our guests feeling refreshed, inspired, and reinvigorated.”

Meanwhile, a separate study published last month revealed that cruising can slow aging. The break from routine, exposure to new environments, social interactions onboard, enrichment classes, fitness activities, and shore excursions can all rejuvenate the mind and body.

With science-backed revelations on the perks of cruising, it’s clear that these vacations at sea offer transformative experiences with immense personal benefits.
