AARP Slashes Carnival Gift Card Discount and Purchase Limit

AARP Travel Rewards recently reduced its discount on Carnival Cruise Line gift cards from 10% to 8%, frustrating some members who use the program to save on cruises.

Some users initially reported that Carnival gift cards were temporarily missing from AARP’s website, which sparked initial confusion.

Regarding the change, Carnival’s Brand Ambassador, John Heald, said Carnival does not control the discount rate. “This has nothing to do with the cruise line,” Heald posted on Facebook, explaining that the AARP determines the discounts, not Carnival.

While the news did upset some loyal gift card buyers, others were still grateful for value. “I will still buy them. In today’s world, a discount is a discount!” one cruiser told Cruise Radio via email.

The new rate has also decreased the amount you can purchase per month. Before the change, it was up to 25 gift cards per month; now, it’s five per month.

How AARP Carnival Gift Cards Work for Cruisers

While AARP membership is primarily geared towards those aged 50 and older, Americans as young as 18 can still join and enjoy most member benefits.

Members under 50 have access to nearly all discounts and perks, with a few exceptions like certain insurance products that are legally restricted to older members.

You must also be an AARP member to purchase the gift cards. Membership is $12 (changes to $20 next year), but if you cruise enough, it may be worth the discount.

For Carnival, members can purchase up to five monthly discounted gift cards, which can be redeemed for cruise bookings or onboard purchases, just like cash.

AARP Travel Reward program is also available for Holland America Line, which was recently cut to 8%, and Celebrity Cruises and Royal Caribbean, which are still at a 10% discount. .
