AmaWaterways to Double Fleet by 2030 With Eight New River Ships

AmaWaterways, the world’s largest cruise line focused solely on river cruising, has announced plans to add eight new ships to its European fleet by 2030.

With this expansion, the company’s global fleet will surpass 40 vessels, doubling its ship count since 2020.

The new ships are a direct response to the growing popularity of AmaWaterways’ immersive, destination-focused river cruises, particularly in Europe.

Company CEO Catherine Powell described the fleet expansion as a “milestone that reflects continued demand from guests and growing opportunities for travel advisor partners.”

Fleet Growth and Experience

AmaWaterways is renowned for its high-touch service and curated shore excursions that prioritize cultural immersion, culinary experiences, and active exploration.

Each cruise offers up to seven included excursions per day, tailored to guests of varying interests and fitness levels.

Examples of guest experiences include:

  • Scenic cycling tours through riverfront towns
  • Wine tastings at historic vineyards
  • Guided walking tours of UNESCO-listed sites
  • Unique excursions such as truffle hunting in southern France

Onboard amenities include pools, walking tracks, fitness centers, and evening cultural performances. Wellness Hosts lead daily fitness and relaxation classes, and guests are supported throughout the journey by a dedicated Cruise Manager. Select suites also feature butler service.

Specialty Cruises and Partnerships

The cruise line continues to appeal to a broad audience with specialty sailings and branded partnerships, including collaborations with Disney, Backroads, and Smithsonian Journeys. These options cater to families, solo travelers, and adventure-seekers.

AmaWaterways is recognized for its guest loyalty, with the highest rate of returning cruisers in the river cruise sector. The company credits this to consistent service, personalized care, and meaningful destination engagement.
