Passengers aboard Carnival Panorama departing from Long Beach this past weekend received an itinerary change notification just one day prior to sailing, due to Hurricane Priscilla developing off Mexico’s Pacific coast and potentially impacting the popular cruise port of Cabo San Lucas.
Storm Forces Last-Minute Itinerary Revision
Captain Salvatore Mangraviti and Carnival’s Fleet Operations Center have been actively monitoring Hurricane Priscilla, which formed Saturday in the eastern Pacific and is moving in a northwesterly direction toward Cabo San Lucas.
The forecasted track is expected to close the port, forcing the cruise line to revise the planned itinerary.
“We know you were looking forward to experiencing Cabo and are sorry for this weather-related change, but we also know you will agree that safety takes priority,” wrote Colleen Oliverio, VP of Guest Services for Carnival Cruise Line, in the guest advisory sent Friday evening.
New Itinerary Adds Catalina Island
The revised six-night voyage now includes a visit to Catalina Island on Wednesday, followed by two consecutive days in Ensenada, Mexico on Thursday and Friday.
The ship will depart Long Beach Saturday at 4:00 PM, spend two fun days at sea, then visit the new ports before returning to Long Beach the following Saturday morning
Pre-purchased shore excursions for Cabo San Lucas will be automatically cancelled and refunded to guests’ Sail & Sign accounts.
Large Storm Develops Rapidly
Over the weekend, the National Hurricane Center, Priscilla is classified as a “large storm” with hurricane storm-force winds extending as far as 140 miles from its center.
Maximum sustained winds reached 45 mph Saturday, and the storm was forecast to strengthen to hurricane status by Sunday while moving parallel to Mexico’s southwestern coast.
Remember that travel insurance must be purchased before the storm is named by the National Hurricane Center to maximize benefits.
