Disney Cruise Line Tightens Birth Certificate Requirements for Kids Under 16

Disney Cruise Line is updating its document verification policies to specify that only original, state-issued birth certificates will be accepted as proof of citizenship for children under 16.

This change aims to simplify the boarding process and ensure compliance with U.S. travel regulations.

What Disney’s News Policy Means

In a recent communication, Disney reminded guests that photocopies of birth certificates would no longer be accepted at embarkation. “Guests using a birth certificate as citizenship documentation are reminded that only an original state-issued birth certificate is acceptable,” states Disney’s policy.

Children 15 years and younger need to present the original birth certificate, while guests 16 years and older must also provide a government-issued photo ID.

This policy applies to all Disney sailings, including upcoming Disney Treasure and Disney Destiny voyages. Any failure to provide proper documentation at boarding may result in guests being denied access to the ship.

Passports are always the best option

The clarification comes as Disney prepares for a busy season of round-trip sailings from U.S. ports like Port Canaveral, New York, and Galveston.

Passports remain a valid alternative, but guests relying on birth certificates must ensure they bring the original, state-issued document to avoid delays.

For families planning cruises, it’s important to note that obtaining an official birth certificate may take several weeks, depending on your state of residence.

Disney encourages guests to plan and reminds everyone to complete their Online Check-In at least 30 days before sailing to ensure a smooth boarding experience.

Whether traveling domestically or internationally, guests should check if passports or additional documents are needed for their itinerary. This is especially important for international sailings, as passports are required without exception.
