Norwegian Cruise Line is investing $150 million to transform its private island, Great Stirrup Cay. New features will start rolling out later this year.

The christening of Norwegian Aqua in Miami also served as the stage for unveiling major updates to Great Stirrup Cay, including progress on a new multi-ship pier and other amenities.

The new pier, already under construction, will allow two large cruise ships to dock simultaneously, eliminating the need for tenders.

What’s Coming to Great Stirrup Cay?

  • Multi-Ship Pier – Expected to open by the end of 2025, increasing guest throughput and eliminating tendering.
  • Expansive Pool Area – Oversized heated pool with a swim-up bar and surrounding lounge space.
  • Kids’ Splash Zone – A fun, interactive water play area for families.
  • Vibe Beach Club – Adults-only area with cabanas, loungers, and upgraded service.
  • Horizon Park – A new recreational area with lawn games and shaded seating.
  • Welcome Center and Tram System – To simplify island navigation and improve arrival experiences.
  • Relaxation Zone – Featuring hammocks and tiki-inspired touches for a laid-back vibe.

Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings CEO Harry Sommer called the pier a “transformational investment” and noted it will increase visitor capacity, which is projected to reach up to 700,000 guests annually by 2026.

The project also includes community investments like scholarships and internships for Bahamian residents.

Sommer added that the pier is just the beginning of a long-term vision for the island, “The new pier will allow for greater guest throughput to the island and better monetization of this key asset,” he said. “It will elevate our guest experience and strengthen our footprint in the Caribbean.”

Cruise Radio’s Take

This upgrade follows a previous enhancement in 2017 and builds on Great Stirrup Cay’s existing offerings, such as zip lining, snorkeling, jet skiing, and beachside dining.

With Norwegian Aqua now sailing to The Bahamas, guests have more reason to visit Great Stirrup Cay.

But with family-friendly rivals like neighboring Perfect Day at CocoCay and Carnival’s upcoming Celebration Key, will these upgrades be enough to convince families to book? Only time will tell.
