Joska, a black Labrador and devoted companion to Cornelia and Cornelis Marinussen, passed away on February 21, 2025, after spending much of her life sailing the world with Holland America. The cruise line shared the news of her passing along with a statement from Holland America Line President Beth Bodensteiner.

“Joska’s bright spirit was beloved by everyone who met her. We’ll always remember her playing and engaging with our crew and guests, as well as her serious and conscientious efforts while on the job. She will be deeply missed,” Bodensteiner said, reflecting on Joska’s impact.

Joska wasn’t just any cruise passenger—she was a globetrotter who accumulated over 700 cruise days, earning the 5-Star Mariner status and the prestigious Platinum Medallion, the highest recognition for Holland America guests.

She explored destinations across Northern Europe, the Mediterranean, Alaska, Hawaii, and the Caribbean, even attending the cruise line’s 150th anniversary celebrations in Rotterdam in 2023.

Beyond her impressive milestones, Joska left a lasting mark on the hearts of crew members and fellow cruisers.

Whether exploring ports worldwide or dutifully assisting Cornelia, Joska symbolized how accessible cruising can be for those who rely on service animals.

The Marinussens have been loyal Holland America cruisers since 2013 and have sailed on nearly 60 voyages. Joska joined their family in 2014 to assist Cornelia, who is legally blind, and quickly became a popular fixture on Holland America’s ships.

Her legacy as the first service animal to reach such an elite loyalty status remains unmatched.
