Royal Caribbean Welcomes New Canine Crew Member to Star of the Seas

Michael Bayley, President and CEO of Royal Caribbean International, melted hearts with his Valentine’s Day Facebook post—announcing that a golden retriever puppy named Sailor will be the family dog onboard Star of the Seas.

“Look who arrived into the world,” Bayley wrote as he shared a picture of a newborn pup with its eyes still closed.

Sailor’s arrival continues a tradition that began with the first Icon-class vessel, Icon of the Seas. The cruise line welcomed its first canine onboard last year, a golden retriever named Rover, who was named Chief Dog Officer.

Like Rover, the fleet’s second pup hails from Eagleridge Goldens, a reputable Florida-based breeder recognized by the American Kennel Club.

Though Sailor is only a few days old, she already has a full and exciting schedule ahead. “She will spend a few months with her Mom, then to her trainer, then she will stay with me a little so I can get and give lots of hugs and love. Then onto ICON to meet her sister Rover for some orientation before joining Star, her home,” Bayley explained.

The second Icon-class vessel, Star of the Seas, debuts in August 2025. Before its official inaugural voyage, the ship will offer two four-night sailings from Florida to Perfect Day at CocoCay, departing on August 23 and August 27.

Before welcoming its first canine crew member, Royal Caribbean worked closely with animal welfare experts at the American Humane Society to develop onboard protocols ensuring the well-being and safety of the dogs.

As the only permanent resident onboard Icon of the Seas, Rover has the freedom to set her schedule. Rather than enforcing structured activities like meet-and-greets, Royal Caribbean allows her to engage with guests and crew on her terms. Her day might include greeting passengers, napping for hours, playing catch, or hanging out with crew members.

Rover’s presence has been a massive success, bringing joy to employees and guests. With nearly 54,000 followers on Instagram, she has become a beloved fixture at sea.

Now, all eyes are on Sailor, who is expected to follow in her sister’s footsteps, charming passengers and crew on Star of the Seas.
