Storm Keeps Cruise Ships Docked Overnight in Southeast Alaska

A strong storm has stopped cruise ships in Southeast Alaska. On Monday, the storm brought high winds and big waves, especially hitting the outer coast and inner channels.

Meteorologist Nathan Compton from the National Weather Service in Juneau said waves were 5 to 6 feet high in places like Icy Strait and Stevens Passage.

Wind gusts at Cape Decision were up to 67 knots, almost as strong as a hurricane.

Because of this, Holland America Line kept its Eurodam and Koningsdam cruise ships docked in Juneau overnight and into Tuesday evening to keep passengers safe.

The Norwegian Bliss also had to change its plans, arriving in Juneau on Monday and checking its schedule due to the storm.

High Wind Warnings were given for the southern panhandle and Baranof Island, but heavy rain was not expected to cause major flooding.

The storm is expected to weaken by Wednesday, allowing things to return to normal.
