Carnival Cruise Line Reinforces Illegal Gambling Rule

Carnival Cruise Line has reiterated its no-gambling policy outside designated casino areas.

A large Carnival cruise ship, the "Carnival Luminosa," docked at a port with a no unauthorized gambling icon overlaying the image.

John Heald, Carnival’s Brand Ambassador, addressed the policy after a guest inquired about playing Left-Center-Right (LCR) for cash during a 14-night Hawaii cruise on Carnival Radiance. While games like LCR are allowed, playing for money is prohibited.

“We do not allow gambling outside of the casino in any way, shape, or form,” Heald said. He suggested that passengers play for fun or use non-monetary items like candies as stakes.

Compliance With Gambling Regulations

Carnival enforces this policy to comply with international gambling laws, which vary significantly by destination.

Other cruise lines, such as Royal Caribbean and Norwegian, implement similar restrictions to manage liability and align with global gambling policies.

Carnival offers alternatives for passengers seeking casual gaming. Quiet zones, such as the upper level of dining rooms or lounges, are available for card and board games. Libraries on select ships and seating along promenades also provide comfortable spaces for social activities.

These designated areas ensure a family-friendly and inclusive atmosphere while maintaining compliance with cruise policies.

In 2023, nearly 40% of cruise passengers visit onboard casinos at least once per voyage. However, many enjoy non-gambling activities, including trivia games, poolside antics, and tournaments.

Carnival Cruise Line first tackled this issue in 2024 when a poolside dice game was shut down on Carnival Luminosa.
