Carnival to Sell Oldest Costa Ship in 2026

Costa Cruises is offloading its oldest ship, Costa Fortuna. The ship will be sold next year to an unnamed buyer.

The sale of the 102,000 gross-ton ship will decrease Costa’s fleet size to eight vessels. It is set to leave the fleet in September 2026.

Fortuna will complete its current Mediterranean season and a scheduled winter 2025/2026 season in the Canary Islands.

In April 2026, the ship will return to the Mediterranean for a final season before departing.

The vessel joined the Costa fleet in 2003 and can accommodate around 2,700 guests at double occupancy.

Costa Fleet Continues to Shrink

The cruise line has been downsizing its fleet in recent years.

Costa Victoria was scrapped due to the pandemic and parent company Carnival shifted Costa Venezia and Costa Firenza into the Carnival ‘fun Italian Style’ sub-brand. Carnival also added Costa Luminosa in 2022.

Meanwhile, the Italy-based cruise line also announced that Costa Serena, launched in 2007, will undergo comprehensive drydock upgrades later this year.

The drydock work will conclude Costa’s €200 million ship modernization program, which began in 2021.

Costa Serena will get renovated suites and upgraded public areas. Dining venues and a new food court will also be enhanced.

“Our goal is to provide unmatched experiences for our guests while embracing innovation, sustainability, and exceptional value for money,” said Mario Zanetti, President of Costa Cruises.

“We are also investing in our fleet to enhance onboard experience and introducing new itineraries, including Costa Serena new deployment for 2026-2027.”

Costa Serena will sail a world cruise between October and December 2026, departing Tokyo for Buenos Aires. In early 2027, Costa Serena will operate cruise itineraries across South America. Costa Serena will then reposition to the Mediterranean Sea for the 2027 summer season.

After the sale of Costa Fortuna, Carnival Corporation will have 93 ships in its portfolio.
