Drew Barrymore Named Godmother of MSC World America

MSC Cruises has announced that actress and television host Drew Barrymore will serve as the godmother of its newest flagship, MSC World America.

The official naming ceremony will take place on April 9 at the new MSC Miami Cruise Terminal, with Barrymore presiding over the champagne bottle-breaking tradition.

Barrymore’s appointment as godmother builds on her recent collaboration with MSC Cruises. She and actor Orlando Bloom co-starred in the company’s “Let’s Holiday” campaign, which debuted during the Big Game, marking a significant partnership with the cruise line. Bloom will also attend the ceremony in Miami.

“When MSC Cruises asked me to be the Godmother of MSC World America, I immediately said yes!” Barrymore said in a statement. “I absolutely love to travel—it fuels my soul—and being part of something that helps people set off on incredible adventures is just amazing.”

MSC Cruises’ tradition of appointing a godmother to bless and bring good fortune to its ships is a longstanding maritime custom. According to Suzanne Salas, EVP of Marketing, eCommerce & Sales for MSC Cruises USA, Barrymore is a perfect fit for the role. “Drew embodies our brand with her exquisite style and grace,” Salas said.

Following the naming ceremony, MSC World America will embark on a celebratory three-night sailing to Ocean Cay MSC Marine Reserve in The Bahamas, a destination featured in the “Let’s Holiday” campaign.

During the visit, the MSC Foundation will host a ribbon-cutting ceremony for its new Marine Conservation Center, which is dedicated to coral reef restoration and environmental education.

MSC World America, the latest addition to MSC Cruises’ fleet, combines European style with American comfort. The ship boasts seven distinct districts catering to different travel experiences, 18 bars and lounges, 19 dining venues—including the only Eataly restaurant at sea, and a variety of entertainment options. Notable features include:

  • The Harbour: An outdoor family-friendly area with a ropes course and over-water swing ride
  • World Promenade: Home to one of the longest dry slides at sea
  • World Galleria: A three-level venue filled with shops, restaurants, and bars
  • MSC Yacht Club: The largest luxury sanctuary in the Caribbean for premium passengers

Fresh from its sea trials, the ship will sail from Miami year-round, offering itineraries to the Eastern and Western Caribbean, with port of calls like Puerto Plata, Costa Maya, Cozumel, and Ocean Cay.

With Barrymore leading the ship’s christening, MSC World America is set to launch with a touch of Hollywood glamor as it begins its voyages from Miami.
