New UK Travel Rule: Cruise Passengers Must Secure Electronic Travel Authorization in 2025

The United Kingdom is introducing a new requirement for visa-exempt travelers who don’t have UK or Ireland passports: the UK Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA). Cruise passengers with upcoming UK itineraries should consider this recently introduced policy before sailing.

The regulation is being introduced to enhance border security through advanced screening.

Non-European nationals who previously didn’t need visas to enter must comply with the regulation by January 8, 2025, while European nationals have until April 2, 2025. Cruise lines have begun communicating with guests and travel partners regarding the mandate.

Who Will Need an ETA?

Various airport vehicles and ground crew are visible outside. The snowy landscape in the background offers serene views for cruisers with kids awaiting their family cruise.

If you fall into the following categories, you’ll need an ETA before going to the UK:

  • You’re an American citizen flying to the UK.
  • You have a connecting flight in the UK. (Even if you don’t intend to leave the airport, you still need one.)
  • You’re going on a cruise and plan to embark or disembark in the UK.
  • You’re joining a sailing with the UK as a port of call and you want to get off the ship and explore.

If you already have a visa, are a British or Irish citizen, have permission to live, work, or study in the UK, or are traveling with a British overseas territories citizen passport, you don’t need an ETA.

Securing an Electronic Travel Authorization

Explore the Google Play Store page for the "UK ETA" app by UK Visas and Immigration. Perfect for Visa-Exempt Travelers or Cruise Passengers, it features an install button, app support, and similar apps. The ETA is a must for all visa-exempt travelers entering the country by land and sea regardless of their purpose for visiting. You can apply for an ETA online or through the Android or iPhone apps.

The application process involves submitting one’s photograph, passport details, personal information, and a £10 (approximately $12.80) fee. Applications are reviewed and processed within three business days.

Using Your ETA

Airlines and cruise lines may ask for your ETA during check-in. If you don’t have one, you could be prevented from boarding.

Approved ETAs remain valid for two years or until your passport expires. If your passport expires before your ETA, your ETA will automatically become invalid so it’s best to check your passport’s expiration date to maximize your ETA’s validity.

A single ETA can be used on multiple entries, with each entry allowing the bearer to remain in the country for up to six months.

Travel requirements, including passport and visa requirements, are constantly changing.

For instance, Disney Cruise Line recently said it would only honor original birth certificates as proof of citizenship for children under 16. It’s best to check with your cruise line or travel agent for a hassle-free cruise experience.
