In the wake of Hurricanes Helene and Milton, which ravaged parts of the United States, Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings (NCLH) has stepped up to aid recovery efforts.
The cruise line has pledged $80,000 to the American Red Cross to support the communities most affected by the devastating storms. The donation includes $30,000 already contributed, with an additional $50,000 from a matching public donation program.
NCLH President and CEO Harry Sommer emphasized the company’s long-standing ties to Florida, where Hurricane Milton made a devastating landfall. “For decades, Florida has been home to NCLH, and we feel deeply connected to this community,” Sommer said.
Hurricane-Affected Areas
Hurricane Helene struck first on September 26, leaving death and destruction across Virginia, Tennessee, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, and Florida. The storm claimed over 250 lives.
Hurricane Milton followed two weeks later, devastating Florida’s Gulf Coast. Heavy winds, strong rains, and storm surges caused flooding and power outages in Central Florida as it moved across cities like Orlando, Fort Myers, and Tampa. The death toll from Milton currently stands at 17.
The Red Cross has been aiding communities affected by Helene and Milton. After Hurricane Helene, relief workers set up temporary shelters, distributed food, and provided critical supplies. The organization also offered refuge to 83,000 people before Milton made landfall.
American Red Cross Chief Development Officer Anne McKeough states that aid workers remain on the ground, helping families recover. Keogh also expressed appreciation for NCLH. “We’re thankful to Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings for standing with us to provide help and hope as communities begin to navigate the long road to recovery,” she added.
How You Can Help
Donations to the American Red Cross can be made via their website, and NCLH will match contributions up to $50,000.
In related news, Carnival Cruise Line President Christine Duffy pledged to help relief efforts last week by skydiving and launching a fundraising campaign for military members and first responders.
