This expansion is expected to bring 150,000 passengers annually, the highest volume in Norfolk’s cruise history, while generating millions in local tourism revenue.

The first-ever year-round cruise from Norfolk set sail today on a six-day voyage to The Bahamas, visiting Freeport and Bimini.

This transformation of Norfolk into a permanent cruise hub follows a $12 million investment in port enhancements, aimed at streamlining embarkation and enhancing the passenger experience.

At a special ceremony before the maiden voyage, local leaders, including Norfolk Mayor Kenneth Alexander and Nauticus Executive Director Stephen Kirkland, joined Carnival Cruise Line Vice President of Port Operations David Candib to commemorate the milestone.

“This expansion means more options for vacationers and a greater economic impact for the Norfolk community,” said Candib. “Carnival’s 23-year partnership with the City of Norfolk and Nauticus has been a great success, and we’re honored to build on our relationship by making Norfolk the newest year-round cruise port on the East Coast.”

Carnival’s decision to establish a permanent homeport in Norfolk aligns with the growing demand for convenient, drive-to-cruise options along the East Coast.

The investment in infrastructure is designed to enhance passenger flow and efficiency, including:

  • A new debarkation ramp allows a seamless transition from the second floor to the luggage hall.
  • An expanded Customs and Border Protection inspection area to speed up processing times.
  • A new seating area, expected to be completed by fall, provides additional comfort for passengers awaiting embarkation.

Mayor Alexander highlighted the significant economic benefits of this expansion, noting that local hotels, restaurants, and businesses will see a steady increase in visitors year-round.

“Norfolk’s maritime legacy enters an exciting new chapter with year-round cruising,” said Alexander. “This expansion strengthens our economy, brings more visitors, and creates new opportunities for our community.”

Cruisers are already celebrating the convenience of Norfolk as a departure port.

“We usually have to drive to Florida for our cruises, but now we can just drive to Norfolk and start our vacation stress-free,” said Sarah M., a passenger from Richmond, Virginia.

Local businesses are equally excited.

“This is a game-changer for the tourism industry here. More cruisers mean more visitors to our restaurants, shops, and hotels,” said Jason Carter, owner of a Norfolk waterfront restaurant.

With year-round cruises now available from Norfolk, passengers have more choices, while the city benefits from a steady influx of tourism and economic growth.
