Construction has officially begun on a fourth cruise terminal at the Port of Galveston, Texas.
This $151 million MSC Cruise build-out includes converting an old cargo warehouse at Pier 16 into a 165,000-square-foot terminal. In addition, a $55 million parking garage is being constructed to accommodate the expected rise in cruise passengers.
The groundbreaking ceremony was a notable event, attended by key figures such as Rodger Rees, the Galveston Wharves port director and CEO, and Rick Sasso, MSC Cruises U.S. chairman.
Cruise Port Details and Economic Impact
The new terminal will be modern, with landscaping, ample parking, and a large digital screen at the entrance. A dedicated lounge for MSC Yacht Club guests is also in the works, providing an upscale experience for passengers.
To manage the expected surge in cruise traffic, a $55 million parking garage will be constructed, featuring ample parking spaces and modern amenities like electric vehicle charging stations.
Economic Boost and Job Creation for Texas
The new terminal is poised to boost Galveston’s economy significantly. Construction and eventual operation will create numerous direct jobs, ranging from construction roles to terminal staff.
In addition, increased demand is expected to benefit local businesses, including hotels, restaurants, and retail stores, leading to further job creation and economic growth.
The terminal is expected to attract over 2 million passengers annually by 2026, driving up local tourism and benefiting various sectors of the local economy.
MSC Seascape and Strategic Expansion
The MSC Seascape accommodates up to 5,877 passengers and will be the first to call the new terminal home. Its arrival underscores MSC Cruises’ commitment to expanding its presence in the US, with Galveston playing a crucial role in this strategy due to its strategic location.
With the arrival of MSC Seascape in November 2025, Galveston is set to solidify its position as a top cruise destination in the US, heralding a bright future for the local economy and the cruise industry.
Last year, Galveston remodeled Terminal 25 for Carnival Cruise Line before Carnival Jubilee arrived in December 2023.
