Princess Cruises had made the difficult decision to cancel over two dozen sailings across several ships.
Interestingly, despite the move clearly being made as a result of how Asian routes are being impacted by coronavirus, the disease was not mentioned in the “itinerary modification” update posted Saturday evening.
Which Sailings Are Being Cancelled
Across the industry, cruise lines are finding themselves having to make changes to itineraries that originated from or visited Asian markets.
This comes at a particularly bad time, given that several cruise lines have been working to make headway in those same areas, with many having repositioned ships in an effort to capitalize on a market that has only recently begun to show potential.
The coronavirus outbreak has been particularly problematic for Princess Cruises, thanks to an outbreak aboard the Diamond Princess which led to both an extended quarantine and a flurry of negative mainstream press attention. Now, the cruise line is working to find the best path forward. “Our team continues working to finalize itinerary changes and to communicate these changes to you as soon as the details are confirmed,” reads an update on their web page.
“Due to current port restrictions and closures and lack of predictability regarding port availability in our Southeast Asia itineraries going forward,” the notice continues, “we have made the decision to cancel additional Asia voyages on Sapphire Princess and Majestic Princess.”
Booked guests will receive full refunds on all costs associated with their trips. They will also receive a Future Cruise Credit, although the update does not say whether this will be a full or partial credit.
Given the number of passengers this could potentially impact, the web page encourages guests “to consult this Itinerary Modification page for changes that may impact your voyage” as opposed to contacting the call center.
Below is a list of the cancellations and itinerary modifications as of Saturday evening. This is in addition to the cancellation of all Diamond Princess sailings through at least mid-March.
