Mechanical Trouble Axes Bahamas Cruise From New York

MSC Cruises has canceled the May 11, 2025, sailing of MSC Meraviglia from New York City, citing a mechanical issue that impacts the ship’s ability to operate at normal cruising speeds.

The 7-night itinerary was set to visit Port Canaveral, Nassau, and the line’s private island, Ocean Cay MSC Marine Reserve. Guests were notified on April 16 and presented with two options: rebook another MSC cruise with added incentives, or receive a full refund.

In a letter to booked guests, MSC said, “Due to a mechanical issue affecting the ship’s ability to operate at standard cruising speeds, we must proceed with necessary repairs. As a result, and with deep regret, we have made the very difficult decision to cancel your upcoming sailing.

For those who rebook by May 2, MSC is offering a $100 onboard credit per person (up to $200 per stateroom), and a 50% Future Cruise Credit based on the original fare paid.

A reader told Cruise Radio, “I’ve already booked flights from San Francisco for this cruise, it’s frustrating to have everything fall through like this.”

This marks the second sailing impacted by mechanical issues aboard Meraviglia. Guests booked on the May 4 sailing were also informed of itinerary adjustments, including an earlier departure and delayed arrivals in Port Canaveral and Nassau.

Shore excursions in Port Canaveral were canceled entirely. Affected guests will receive the same $100 onboard credit per person.

The 4,400-guest MSC Meraviglia has been homeporting in Brooklyn since 2023 and is the first MSC ship to be based year-round in New York.

While the cruise line has not provided a repair timeline, recent guests have reported ongoing speed issues, including delays and canceled excursions in prior sailings.

Guests took to social media to vent, with some mentioning nonrefundable travel plans and regretting not purchasing travel insurance.
