Royal Caribbean International has named a replacement godmother for new ship Star of the Seas following original pick Diana Ross recently canceling her appearance for next week.
The cruise line appointed research astronaut Kellie Gerardi as new godmother. Gerardi will christen the new ship during a ceremony in Port Canaveral which takes place as planned on August 20.
Replacement Found for Diana Ross

She became the 90th woman to fly to space, and has made several flights with Virgin Galactic. Royal Caribbean describes her as a “payload specialist, researcher, children’s book author and devoted mother who inspires millions of people daily.”
“Known for her groundbreaking work in bioastronautic and STEM advocacy, Kellie brings a spirit of exploration that aligns perfectly with Royal Caribbean’s mission,” the cruise line said. She has a large social media following and was named a USA Today Woman of the Year and listed on the TIME100 Creator list.
Royal Caribbean International CEO explained the thinking behind the decision to appoint Gerardi. Citing the ship’s name and its home on the Space Coast, Bayley said: “Why don’t we find someone who’s been to space, and can really embody what Royal Caribbean is doing in terms of adventure and excitement.”
Official Maiden Voyage in Late August
After a series of showcase cruises, the Star of the Seas departs on its official inaugural cruise on August 31. The 250,000-ton ship will sail the Western Caribbean with stops in Cozumel, Costa Maya and Roatán. Its Eastern Caribbean program features calls at San Juan, St. Thomas, St. Maarten and St. Kitts. Star of the Seas sails year-round from Port Canaveral.
The cruise line had originally announced in June that Motown legend Diana Ross would be the ship’s godmother. The 81-year old singer announced this week she was unable to fulfil the role, citing “unforeseen circumstances.”
“We are disappointed that Diana Ross is unable to join us to be godmother of Star of the Seas. We look forward to announcing our new godmother soon,” the cruise line said earlier this week.
