Machu Picchu Shut Down Due to Political Unrest
Popular tourism destination Machu Picchu has been shut down as violence and anti-government protests take place in Peru. The closure also includes the international airport.
Because of the unrest, Celebrity Cruises has paused its calls to Peru through at least February 4th, and passengers on luxury ship Seabourn Sojourn were not allowed off during a service call in Peru earlier this month. Lindblad Expeditions, which offers both land and cruise tours has also been forced to cancel offerings in the country.
Normally, Pisco and Lima are the cruise ports that serve as a gateway for passengers to visit Machu Picchu, which is a 15th century Incan ruin.
