Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings Ltd. (NCLH) has partnered with AtmosAir Solutions to install new air purification systems across its three-brand, 28-ship fleet. The technology promises “continuous active COVID disinfection.”
AtmosAir Solutions calls its patented air filtration system technology an “all-natural solution with no harmful chemicals, radiation or by-products.”
The company says the technology works by releasing ions through the HVAC system. These ions bond with viruses, breaking down their cellular structure and rendering them harmless.

“The bi-polar ionization technology continually and proactively attacks coronavirus and other viruses, bacteria, spores and volatile organic compounds quickly and effectively in the air and on surfaces, rather than requiring the air to be filtered out first,” AtmosAir says in a press release.
One of the advantages of the bi-polar ionization process, the company says, is that it allows air purification to occur within a desired space, treating a larger volume of air, instead of relying on contaminants passing through the air handler unit to be cleaned.
Tests performed by Microchem Laboratory, described as “one of the world’s preeminent laboratories for testing EPA- and FDA-registered sanitizing products,” determined that the presence of coronavirus was reduced by 99.92% within 30 minutes of exposure to AtmosAir.
AtmosAir says more than 7,500 locations across the globe are currently using the technology, including airports, casinos, sports facilities, educational institutions, commercial buildings, and other spaces where people live, work, and play.

“While it is impossible to completely eliminate the risks associated with COVID-19, the AtmosAir technology is one of the many investments the company is making to enhance its already rigorous health and safety standards,” said Robin Lindsay, executive vice president of Vessel Operations for NCLH. The company operates the Norwegian Cruise Line, Oceania Cruises, and Regent Seven Seas Cruises brands.
