Carnival Cruise Line has announced news that will make foodies happy: They’re currently testing a dining package. And while it is currently only available on the Carnival Horizon, the program is expected to be introduced to other ships in the future.

How Much The Dining Plan Will Cost

According to a post on the Facebook page of Brand Ambassador John Heald, the package currently being offered on Carnival Horizon is basically a voucher system. For $60 per person, passengers who opt to purchase the plan will receive one meal at Fahrenheit 555 — the line’s signature steakhouse — as well as two $15 vouchers which can be redeemed at the Pig & Anchor Smokehouse Brewhouse, Bonsai Sushi, Cucina del Capitano or JiJi Asian Kitchen.

“For now,” Heald wrote, “this is just available on Carnival Horizon, but we will be doing other ships in the near future, and I will let you know about them.”

Heald also indicated that, at least for now, this is being offered on a limited basis. “We won’t issue too many of these [vouchers] per voyage,” he wrote, “so if you wish me to reserve you a voucher, you can let me know no later than 7 days before the cruise and I will make it so.”

The cost of the vouchers is non-refundable, and it does not serve as a reservation. “You will still need to make reservations… in the usual way,” Heald noted. He indicated that those interested should head to the Visitors Posts section of his Facebook page and include their sail date, cabin number and how many vouchers they were looking to purchase.

Reaction in the comment section beneath the post was mixed. While many were happy to see Carnival finally offering a dining package, others weren’t impressed by the savings offered. (With the steakhouse costing currently costing $38 per person, the package would represent a savings of $8 per voucher.)

Carnival is a bit of a latecomer to the dining package program. Royal Caribbean offers both a 3-dinner package and the Ultimate Dining Package, which allows passengers to eat at specialty restaurants throughout the length of their voyage. Norwegian — which offers a free-dining package as one of their booking ”perks” — also sells packages which can be bought for as many nights of the cruise as one wishes.

Being the newest ship in the fleet, Carnival Horizon has often been used as a testing ground for new programs. It was on this ship that the new Sea Day Brunch menu first was introduced, as well as the ability to order a pizza on the Hub App and have it delivered practically anywhere on the ship.
