New Carnival Ship Gears Up for River Transit

The construction of Carnival Jubilee is progressing smoothly, and the ship is set to depart for its conveyance.

On Monday, the vessel will start its conveyance along the river Ems from the shipyard in Papenburg, Germany, to Eemshaven in the Netherlands.

The journey marks another milestone in its highly-anticipated delivery. Carnival Jubilee is the third in the cruise line’s Excel class, after Mardi Gras (July 2021) and Carnival Celebration (November 2022).

The Carnival Jubilee is the first cruise ship made in Germany for the Carnival Cruise Line brand and the third made by the company. The sister yard, MEYER TURKU, had previously delivered the other two in Finland.

Sailing backward up the River Ems

Interestingly, Carnival Jubilee will sail backward on the Ems towards the North Sea, assisted by two tugboats.

Due to the strong propulsion in the aft, traveling stern first helps make maneuvering easier, which is important when such a large vessel is traveling through narrow passages.

Carnival Jubilee is 1,130 feet long and 137 feet wide. In some areas, the vessel will have only a few feet of clearance on each side as it heads north.

The pilot team from Emden will oversee the ship’s transfer. With years of experience and ongoing training, the pilots use cutting-edge technology to simulate a realistic journey down the river Ems in Wageningen, Netherlands.

A local pilot spoke on the upcoming transit, “It’s a narrow river, but with favorable conditions, this will be another textbook conveyance.”

The weather for Monday’s transit in Papenburg is expected to be sunny with a slight chance of rain.

All these ships are designed with low-emission LNG, and a unique feature for passengers is an onboard roller coaster. Jubilee will also have two ocean-themed zones, Currents and The Shores.

Carnival has appointed Captain Andrea Catalani, Chief Engineer Vittorino Perasole, and Hotel Director Pierre Camilleri as the ship’s senior officers. All three have been in the yard preparing for the launch.

The ship will debut in Galveston on December 23, 2023, with its first voyage sailing the week of Christmas. It will sail year-round voyages from Texas.
